COVID-19 Update 6/8/2021

Montgomery County a National Leader in Vaccination Rates

According to CDC data, in counties with a population of more than 300,000, Montgomery County leads the nation in the percentage of residents 12 and older who have been vaccinated.  Since the Pfizer vaccine was approved for adolescents ages 12- to 15-years in May, more than 28,000 youth have received their first dose. There are an estimated 60,000 residents 12-15 years old, and the goal is to vaccinate all of them. If you or someone you know has a teenaged family member, encourage them to get vaccinated at one of the County-run clinics. Or use the State website to find pharmacies offering the vaccine and make appointments.

More Clinics in the Community

To meet the changing needs of residents looking for vaccination, we are increasing the number of small vaccination clinics in neighborhoods throughout the community. These sites are typically one-day clinics in apartment buildings, community centers and churches. This week, clinics are being held at Sligo Adventist Church in Takoma Park June 8 & 9, Briggs Chaney Park & Ride June 9 – 13, and Interfaith Works Clothing Center in Rockville on June 15. Appointments are not required. To avoid filling out paperwork at the site, residents can make an appointment online.

Young people ages 12 to 17 are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine only. If you are bringing a teen to be vaccinated, check to make sure the Pfizer vaccine is being offered. Consent is given as part of the online appointment scheduling process, so adolescents with an appointment do not need to have a parent or guardian with them. Those who walk up without an appointment must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to provide consent. Everyone under the age of 18 must bring proof of age to the vaccination site.

Face Coverings Not Required in Most County Facilities

Face covering requirements were lifted in most Montgomery County facilities as of June 7. Face coverings are still required in County buildings that offer health services, such as the Crisis Center, dental clinics, correctional facilities and homeless shelters.  This is consistent with current State of Maryland policy and CDC guidance. Businesses and workplaces can choose to require face coverings. Additionally, the State health department is encouraging everyone age two and older, and who is not fully vaccinated, to wear face coverings in all public indoor settings and outdoors where physical distancing is not possible.

State Beginning to Reduce the Number of Mass Vaccination Sites

With less demand for vaccinations and more than 58% of Marylanders with at least one dose, the State has started to reduce the number of mass vaccination sites available to the public. The mass vaccination site in Greenbelt closed June 1. Other mass vaccination sites, such as the ones at M&T Bank Stadium and Six Flags, are scheduled to close on July 2 and July 17 respectively. The clinic at Montgomery College Germantown is still open and providing vaccinations Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. and Thursdays 12 noon -7 p.m.

Since the State has begun closing mass vaccination sites, they are shifting to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine so that people will not need to come back for a second dose.  If you or someone you know has not scheduled an appointment to get vaccinated, please schedule an appointment today.
