COVID-19 Vaccination Update: Over 196,000 Bivalent Vaccine Doses Administered in Peru H1 2023

During the first half of January, 196,635 doses of the bivalent vaccine against covid-19 were administered throughout the country. According to the Executive Directorate of Immunizations of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), an average of 13,000 doses are administered daily. Due to the slight increase in virus infections, more people are approaching the vaccination points in Metropolitan Lima and regions.

Likewise, one year after immunization with the bivalent vaccine began in Peru, 3,322,702 doses have been applied thanks to the vaccination campaigns that have been intensified throughout the country.

More than 1 million adults over 60 years of age have received their first booster shot of the bivalent vaccine, while more than 194,000 have already completed their second dose. Meanwhile, around 1.8 million people between 12 and 59 years old are already up to date with their bivalent dose.

The Minsa reminds that the bivalent vaccine is still valid, it is safe and effective, because it prevents serious complications of covid-19. People over 60 years of age and people with any comorbidity receive 2 boosters of the bivalent vaccine, at an interval of 4 months. While the rest of people over 6 months without any risk factors only require one dose of the bivalent.

As recalled, Peru already has more than 1,300,000 doses of the omicron XBB 1.5 vaccine, also called the monovalent vaccine adapted against covid-19. The directive for its application will be published in the coming days.

These doses are intended to strictly protect vulnerable populations such as older adults, chronically ill people, people with immunosuppression or diseases that reduce the defense system, as well as pediatric patients in vulnerable conditions, pregnant women and health personnel.
