On December 27, 2020, vaccination against a virus that had turned the world upside down began in all the autonomous communities of Spain: COVID-19. The first vaccine to be administered was the one developed by Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty). Then came those made by Moderna (Spikevax), AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria) and Janssen.
The first to be vaccinated were the priority groups: residents and staff in centers for the elderly and care for large dependents; first-line health and social health personnel, and large non-institutionalized dependents. They were followed by those over 80 years of age and, gradually, by the following age groups, taken by decades. The last to join were children from 5 to 11 years old.
From then until now, the health area of Pontevedra and O Salnés has administered a total of 843,477 vaccines among the population of both regions, made up of around 300,000 residents, although not all of them fell within the vaccination target.
As reported to FARO by Silvia Amoedo Casqueiro, deputy director of Primary Care Nursing, the total number of vaccinated with a complete schedule is 276,670. In addition, with the first memory dose there are 224,170 people, while with the second memory dose the figure drops to 90,859.
With the age ranges, the percentage of the population that has the booster dose decreases the younger the person is. Thus, among those over 85 years of age, 92.07% have it, while among those from 80 to 84 years it is 91.32%.
Among those between 70 and 79 years old they are 89.18% and nine points less, 80.35%, in the case of those between 60 and 69 years old.
From 50 to 59 years, 17.97% have the booster dose, from 40 to 49 they are 11.46% and from 30 to 39 years, 7.64%.
The lowest figures are those of the youngest age groups: 5.72% in the case of those between 20 and 29 years of age, 1.95% in those between 12 and 19 years of age and 3.31% in the from 5 to 11 years old.
“There is a before and after the vaccine. Although no one wants to get vaccinated anymore, we are still here “
Silvia Amoedo. Deputy Director of Nursing
At present, it is basically vaccinating those people who had not received any dose or who are missing any of the booster doses and want to receive it. In general, activity in this sense has dropped a lot in the health area, since, for example, those who have had the disease this winter and already had three previous doses are not recommended for the fourth, since having exceeded the virus already counts as such.
“Right now we have to wait and see what order they give. Because it is not yet known if it will be an annual vaccine like the flu vaccine or like the pneumococcal vaccine, which is administered every five years. Actually, as it is something new, it is beginning. We no longer receive people every day because the request for vaccines has fallen a lot”, explains Silvia Amoedo. “People continue to be called, such as children who are turning years old and people who are missing doses.”
The deputy director of Nursing adds that there are many citizens who already recognize that they do not want to be revaccinated anymore when they are called: “There are people who have already passed the disease and that is why they do not get more doses and there are also, for example, cancer patients who they have ceased to be so and no longer need so much reinforcement. As everyone already sees that things are going better and the light is seen, it has gone down a lot ”.
In any case, he stresses that “there is a before and after the vaccine.” “Now we will have to see how the disease evolves and adapt the vaccine to the reality we are experiencing now. Although no one wants to be vaccinated anymore, we continue to vaccinate ”, she concludes.
Vaccination in Montecelo
In the health area, the population is vaccinated at the Montecelo and O Salnés hospitals. In the case of Pontevedra, the schedule is in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All the slots can be consulted on the website:
Active cases rise to 177, 21 of them hospitalized
The health area of Pontevedra and O Salnés currently has 177 active cases of coronavirus, after registering a slight rebound in the disease in recent days, as reported by the Department of Health. Of the total infected by the virus, 21 are hospitalized, although only three of them are in the Critical Care Unit. The figures at this time last year were very different, since there were 1,048 people infected. There were also many more who were hospitalized at the time: 66. Since the pandemic was declared in March 2020 to date, 365 people have died, most of them elderly and with previous pathologies, according to Sergas. In that period of time, 79,063 people from Pontevedra and O Salnés were infected, which represents 26% of the population of both regions. Although with complete certainty the number of positives has been much higher, since the asymptomatic ones would have to be added and all those patients who had the virus and did not notify the authorities, not appearing in the official statistics.
