Covid-19 Vaccination for Children with Cancer Follow Doctor’s Recommendations

Children with cancer patients are asked to consult before being vaccinated against Covid-19.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – General Chairperson of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Dr. Piprim B Yanuarso, SpA(K), said Covid-19 immunization for children with cancer in the maintenance phase, chronic or controlled autoimmune diseases need consultation with a doctor. “Immunization for children with cancer in the maintenance phase, chronic or controlled autoimmune diseases can follow general immunization guidelines by consulting with the doctor in charge of the patient beforehand,” he said in a written statement, Tuesday (2/11).

IDAI also reminded, before and after vaccination, all children should wear masks correctly, keep a distance, not crowd, and not travel if not urgent. The implementation of immunization must follow the policy of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and can be started after considering the readiness of health workers, facilities, infrastructure and the community.

He said, children can be infected and/or transmit the Corona virus that causes Covid-19 from and to adults around them such as parents, other people who live in the same house, people who come to the house, friends or teachers at school in face-to-face learning, even without face-to-face learning. symptom. Therefore, IDAI recommends giving Covid-19 immunization with the Coronavac vaccine to children aged six years and over, where the vaccine is given intramuscularly at a dose of 0.5 ml twice with a distance of the first dose to the second dose, which is four weeks. .

Vaccination is not recommended for children who have or have contraindications, namely primary immune deficiency, uncontrolled autoimmune disease, Gullian Barre syndrome, transverse myelitis, acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis, and children with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Vaccination is also not recommended for children who are receiving severe immunosuppressant/cytostatic treatment, have a fever of 37.50 degrees Celsius or more, children have recently recovered from Covid-19 in less than three months, and other post-immunizations are less than one month.

Children or adolescents who are pregnant, have hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and/or chronic diseases or uncontrolled congenital abnormalities, are also not recommended to undergo Covid-19 vaccination. IDAI also urges all its members to carry out catch-up immunizations and routine immunizations to prevent extraordinary occurrences of infectious diseases that can be prevented by immunization in addition to helping increase the coverage of Covid-19 immunization in children.

“All pediatricians who are members of IDAI are expected to follow the guidelines for reporting immunization and subsequent monitoring that have been issued by the Ministry of Health,” he said.
