As of today, people in the United States can get an annual shot against the coronavirus in various places. The American Disease Control Center (CDC) this week recommended that everyone older than six months be vaccinated against corona. The first shots could be given within 48 hours.
From now on, the shot will be offered annually in the US together with the flu shot, among other things. The corona vaccine is therefore included in the standard vaccination program, which is not the case in the Netherlands.
According to the Health Council, a large part of the Dutch population has now built up immunity against the coronavirus, through vaccination or infection. So not everyone has to report for a (booster) injection this winter. However, it is important that immunity is maintained for the time being, the Health Council believes.
That is why certain groups of Dutch people are recommended to get a corona shot. This concerns people aged 60 or older, pregnant women, healthcare staff and people between 18 and 60 years old who are already invited annually for the flu shot. This concerns, for example, people with a high medical risk.
Invitation
Starting next week, the first Dutch people will receive an invitation for the corona shot. The only group that receives an invitation is the group of people aged 60 and over. From October 2, they can actually receive the corona vaccine.
The others to whom the vaccine is recommended will not receive an invitation. People who want to get the shot can make an appointment with the GGD from mid-October.
This is because the patient data is only known to the GP, says a spokesperson for the RIVM. General practitioners are not obliged to invite patients who are eligible for the corona shot. They can, however, add a paragraph to the invitation for the flu shot, in which they inform people that they may be eligible for a corona vaccination.
Vaccination program
The corona shot is available until the end of December. For pregnant women and people referred by a doctor due to a high medical risk, the corona shot will remain available afterwards.
Whether the corona shot should be added to an annual vaccination program depends on how the virus develops, the Health Council says. The council has recommended that the vaccination program be evaluated annually in the coming years and adjusted where necessary.
