COVID-19 Vaccination and Infections Update: El Salvador’s Progress and Trends in June

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) withdrew the declaration of an international public health emergency for covid-19 on May 5 with the global drop in infections and decrease in death, it recommended that vaccination and measures be continued to increase immunity. In El Salvador, the population has largely stopped using masks and other protections, but vaccination continues, although much less than in the last year of the pandemic. The epidemiological bulletins from week 22 to 26, corresponding to the month of June, indicate that the public network of the Ministry of Health (Minsal) applied 8,448 new doses of the available immunizer. These bulletins detail that between May 28 and July 1, the authorities applied 1,396 to newly vaccinated with the first dose of anticovid vaccines; a significantly lower number of 927 doses were applied as a second dose. The figures are much higher in the case of third doses with 2,845 applications and 3,280 in the case of fourth doses. As for the infections in June, the Minsal reported 28 cases without deaths due to the infection, whose behavior without deaths has been registered since February. June closed as the fifth consecutive month without covid-19 deaths in El Salvador but with a slight increase in cases compared to April to May where they remained at very low levels. Until April, the Ministry of Health maintained anticovid vaccination in 185 health units.
