Covid-19 triggers the alert in Honduras with three deaths in less than a week

Tegucigalpa, December 12. The covid-19 has triggered the alarm at least in public hospitals in Honduras, after the death of three people in Tegucigalpa, in less than a week and the daily contagion of about a hundred in the north of the country, according to official sources.

The three deaths confirmed at Hospital Escuela, in the Honduran capital, came from the departments of Choluteca and Valle, in the south of the country.

Hospital Escuela’s clinical management coordinator Franklin Gómez said two of the deceased, a man and a woman, did not have the full vaccination schedule against the deadly disease.

He added that five other people are hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

According to health authorities, in recent days there have been about 564 cases of infection with the disease, which has caused about 11,000 deaths since March 2010, when the pandemic began to spread.

Carlos Umaña, one of the doctors at the hospital of the Honduras Social Security Institute, in San Pedro Sula, the second most important city of Honduras, suggested this Monday on social networks “that a technical team analyze the application of a fifth dose to elderly patients if they are already 6 months old or less, according to scientific criteria”.

“Dear pregnant women, covid is chasing you, take care of yourself and complete your vaccination programs. Do not go out unless strictly necessary and do not lower your mask indoors, be very careful during the Christmas holidays, the vaccine is completely safe and it does not cause harm to the fetus,” Umaña said in another message.

According to the same doctor, Honduras is “facing an unprecedented epidemic” and “out of 100 tests carried out, 80 are positive”.

On Sunday Umaña reported that “the positive surgical covid cases start and when it happens it means that the virus has a high community load, this week the triage centers in San Pedro Sula must be opened, otherwise (in) the health centers there will be massive contagion” .
