The average number of new Covid-19 cases registered per day worldwide this week rose 10% to 575,918, according to AFP’s data collection released on Thursday.
Following a decline in the spread of the virus in late April and mid-June, the number of new cases of Covid-19 continues to rise, largely due to the spread of the more contagious delta.
However, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 represents only a fraction of the actual number of cases, and different countries have different data collection practices and testing levels.
In the United States and Canada, new Covid-19 cases have increased by 57% and in the Middle East by 28%. Asia saw an increase of 11%, while Latin America and the Caribbean saw an increase of 7%, while Africa saw a 2% increase.
Meanwhile, the number of new Covid-19 cases in Oceania has fallen by 11% and in Europe by 3%.
Looking at the situation in individual countries, the largest increase was recorded in Morocco, where the number of new Covid-19 cases increased by 118%.
Turkey has seen a 107% increase, while Vietnam and Japan have seen a 61% increase in new Covid-19 cases. In the United States, the number of new Covid-19 cases has increased by 57%.
The largest decline was in Botswana, where the number of new Covid-19 cases fell by 48%.
In the Netherlands, the number of new Covid-19 cases has fallen by 46%, in Zambia by 42%, in the United Kingdom by 38% and in Colombia by 32%.
The largest number of new cases this week was registered in the United States. There, Covid-19 was detected in 471,524 people, an increase of 57% over the previous week. In Brazil, Covid-19 this week revealed 315,658 people, an increase of 21%; in Indonesia, 297,867 new Covid-19 cases were registered, a decrease of 3% over the previous week. In India, 270,394 people were diagnosed with Covid-19 this week, which is about the same as the previous week, while 202,607 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in Iran, an increase of 27%.
In terms of population, the highest number of new cases of Covid-19 was detected this week in Fiji, where 684 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants were registered. Fiji is followed by Cyprus with 625 Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Gibraltar with 576 cases, Cuba with 515 cases and Georgia with 451 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
According to official figures, a total of 62,456 people died worldwide this week with Covid-19, down 8% from the previous week.
The leader in vaccinating people against Covid-19 this week was Bhutan, which vaccinated 3.59% of the population every week this week. In Bhutan, almost 60% of the population received a second dose of Covid-19 in ten days. Vaccination with the first dose has been performed at a similar rate in the past.
In countries with more than a million people, Sri Lanka is the leader in vaccination this week, with 1.78% vaccinated every day. Malaysia has vaccinated 1.53% of the population every day, Panama 1.44%, Mauritius 1.30%, Turkey and Ecuador have both vaccinated every day this week 1.24%.
