10:04 am – OECD warns of possible consequences of the Education pandemic

The negative consequences of the covid-19 pandemic could be extended to Education, not only in the functioning of schools, but also in the financing and internationalization of education, warned the OECD today.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) today published the 2020 edition of the report “Education at a Glance”, which this year has a new chapter dedicated to the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the organization, it is still too early to predict the negative consequences of the pandemic in the sector, but national governments will certainly “face difficult decisions”, right from the beginning of the allocation of resources.

In Portugal, this is a particularly worrying issue, since, the report recalls, in 2017 the country’s expenditure on education was already below the OECD average. (Lusa)

09h29 – Algarve businessman questions in court limitations in meetings

A businessman residing in the Algarve filed an urgent subpoena to protect rights, freedoms and guarantees, considering that the limitations of meetings imposed due to the pandemic violate the Portuguese Constitution and Human Rights.

This urgent action is provided for in Portuguese law, is regulated by articles 109 to 111 of the Code of Procedure in Administrative Courts and aims at “defending the legally protected rights and interests of citizens in the confrontation with Public Administration actions, similar to what happens with precautionary measures “, the businessman Oren Avital told Lusa.

The businessman in the software computing area said he was “disillusioned” with Portuguese democracy – whose “quality” was one of the reasons for choosing Portugal to reside about two years ago – after the Government made decisions, because of the pandemic de covid-19, to limit the number of people participating in meetings, in a “violation of the Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees provided for in the Constitution”.

“It cannot be any politician or minister to make these decisions, which violate the Portuguese Constitution and Human Rights themselves,” said Oren Avital, arguing that these measures are “against the Constitution because fundamental rights can only be limited with a law of the parliament or authorized government decree-law “, which” would necessarily have to be promulgated or vetoed by the President of the Republic “.
