Here we follow the developments of the new coronavirus pandemic on an international scale.
7:53 am – New numbers from China
Chinese authorities have recorded 27 cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, including ten from local contagion.
China thus maintains a downward trend in the number of imported cases, after a significant increase earlier this week, among Chinese citizens who entered the northeast China’s Heilongjiang province from Russia.
Among the local contagion cases, seven were detected in Heilongjiang, two in Guangdong province, near Macau, and one in Sichuan, in southwest China.
As of 23:59 on Friday (16:59 in Lisbon), there were no new fatalities.
The country thus reduced the number of “active” infected people back to 1058, including 85 in serious condition.
7:40 am – Over 36,000 dead in the United States
The United States has surpassed the 700,000 cases of Covid-19 recorded since the epidemic began in the country, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
The country, which since the end of March has been the most affected in the world by covid-19 caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), now counts 700,282 cases of contagion and 36,773 deaths, he said. The United States is the country with the highest
death toll from respiratory disease, ahead of Italy
(more than 22 thousand dead), Spain (more than 19 thousand dead) and France
(more than 18 thousand dead).
According to the same source at 1:30 am this Saturday in Lisbon, the United States recorded 3,856 deaths in the last 24 hours, a number that includes deaths “probably related” to covid-19 and not initially accounted for.
This week, New York announced it would add 3,778 “probable” deaths from Covid-19 to the city’s death toll.
The American Centers for the Prevention and Fight against Diseases (CDC, a government agency) indicated that the country had, on Friday at 9 pm in Lisbon, 33,049 deaths, including 4,226 probable, caused by the covid-19.
This number is slightly lower than that advanced by Johns Hopkins University.
7:15 am – State of play
The country started at 3 am on Saturday the third period of the state of emergency. Differences are scarce compared to the previous 15 days.
The new period was approved on Thursday. Parliament then gave the green light for a second renewal proposed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, which extends the measure until 2 May.In an interview with Express, António Costa
reveals that it intends to deliver an additional budget before the summer.
Stresses that the recovery will be slow and that State support for
economy will have limitations. It also warns that the current expense will imply the
tax increases in the future.
During the parliamentary session, the Prime Minister, António Costa, said he hoped this was the last time it was necessary to renew the state of emergency. He also said that the next 15 days “are decisive” to prepare for the next phase of reactivating the economy.
The Chief Executive admitted that some restrictions would be maintained over the next year and a half to prevent the pandemic from worsening again until there was a vaccine.
In a message to the country at the end of Thursday, the President of the Republic also expressed the wish that it was the last time he signed the renewal of the state of emergency and justified the extension with the need to give “time and space” to the Government to define criteria for the reopening of society and the economy, creating “trust and security” in the Portuguese.
