Former Portuguese Prime Minister and former President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, is today president of the Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI), an institution that will seek to control the covid-19 pandemic by the end of the year. .
José Manuel Durão Barroso replaces Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigeria economist and finance minister, whose term ended on Thursday.
The appointment of the former Portuguese Prime Minister was announced on September 29, and the choice was unanimously approved by the GAVI Board of Directors at a meeting in Geneva.
In late October, speaking at the end of a training for journalists dedicated to the Portuguese presidency of the European Union carried out by Agência Lusa, the former president of the European Commission said that GAVI’s goal is that this most acute phase of the pandemic is under control in the end of 2021 remembering, however, that there are billions of people to vaccinate and that it will take time.
“There is a fundamental problem here that GAVI is trying to solve, which is to ensure that everyone who wants to have access to the vaccine, which is equitable, which is not just for rich countries,” he said, pointing out that “there is a humanitarian issue , but also of interest, in making vaccines as widespread as possible “.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) of virology has reported 22,924 new SARS-CoV-19 infections and 553 Covid-19 deaths in Germany in the past 24 hours, the institution announced.
The institute warns, however, that the figures are difficult to interpret because not many tests have been carried out due to the passing of the year and it is possible that not all health offices have reported their latest data.
The maximum number of deaths in a day recorded since the start of the pandemic occurred on Wednesday, when there were 1,129 deaths.
The weekly incidence is 141.9 contagions per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the RKI. The authorities consider that the weekly incidence reaches a critical level when 50 contagions are reached per 100,000 inhabitants.
8:30 am – Vaccines and economic resuscitation in António Costa’s New Year message
Completing the anti-covid-19 vaccination plan and “reviving the economy” are two of the priorities outlined today by the prime minister in a New Year message in which he asks the Portuguese to pursue an “extraordinary mobilization”.
In a New Year’s message published today in the Jornal de Notícias, António Costa states that “the priority of the priorities” is vaccination against covid-19, to achieve “the longed-for group immunity”, although the process extends until “at the end the first quarter of 2022 “.
“If vaccines that are in development are successful, if those that are already approved are approved, if no hiccups occur with the production of the vaccine that is already being administered, everything will continue to go as planned and in the end of the summer it is possible that we achieve the desired group immunity “, reads the message.
On the day that Portugal starts the rotating presidency of the European Union, the Prime Minister recalls that one of the objectives is to ensure the launch of the Recovery and Resilience Program, and the respective national plans, including that of Portugal.
“Our plan responds to the urgency to revive the economy, but it does not forget or sacrifice the great strategic challenges we face. (…) It is a plan for unique opportunities”, not least because “the crisis caused by this pandemic has generated dramatic situations of poverty and inequality “, warned António Costa.
The economic recovery, explains the Head of Government, will imply “a robust and transversal package of support to companies”.
“Between March and December, we added more than 21 billion euros of support to the economy and employment. In 2021, we extended the Support for Progressive Resumption, expanded and made more flexible the Support Program, which allows to cover part of the fixed costs of the most affected by the crisis, and we launched new mechanisms to support commercial income “, he affirmed.
In the New Year message, António Costa speaks of “herculean task”.
“Therefore, the extraordinary mobilization of the Portuguese has to continue, now oriented towards reconstruction. This is a turning point, which will be decisive for Portugal”, he appealed.
