Covid-19: the departments where the epidemic is progressing the fastest, our map of France

The lull is officially behind us. And the fifth wave is definitely here. In seven days, between November 9 and 15, 124.2 new positive cases for the coronavirus were recorded in Gironde, 193.2 in Bouches-du-Rhône, or 241.1 in Ardèche. Apart from the island of Mayotte, all the departments of mainland France and overseas have an incidence rate above the alert threshold set at 50 contaminations per 100,000 by the health authorities. More than 64 territories even record incidence rates greater than 100 contaminations per 100,000 over seven days. Ardèche and Corsica are by far the most affected with respectively 241.1 and 233.2 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants between 9 and 15 November.

But the indicator is progressing very quickly among those who were relatively spared so far. In Aube, contamination by the Covid-19 virus more than doubled, from 27.1 positive cases in early November to 62.6 per 100,000 on November 15. Rather quiet at the beginning of autumn, the Orne is also undergoing a surge of the epidemic. The incidence rate there has almost doubled and now stands at 118.5 Sars-CoV-2 contaminations per 100,000 inhabitants between 9 and 15 November. Almost all departments have an incidence rate that has increased over the past two weeks. A small handful are benefiting from a drop in contamination, such as Mayotte (-51.6%) and Guyana (-47.3%).

France is however less affected than the countries of Eastern Europe such as Austria, which is re-fining its entire population. Hence the absence of stronger restrictions decided by the authorities for the moment. If government spokesman Gabriel Attal conceded that the “5th wave is here”, he believes that France is not facing a flood of contaminations.
