As I told you in my previous articles, Covid-19 screening tests are increasingly seen as an essential weapon to restart the travel industry, while containing the coronavirus epidemic. British Airways, KLM, Delta Airlines and Alitalia have already set up so-called “Covid-Free” flights, with systematic passenger testing.
The American authorities are now on the scene! The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has ruled that all travelers who wish to travel to the United States by plane from January 26, 2021 will be required to test negative for Covid-19 upon boarding.
With borders currently closed for tourists until further notice, this new provision is only intended for people authorized to travel between the US and Europe, especially expats who reside in the United States. See the list of people who can currently travel between Europe and the USA.
How does it work in practice?
In concrete terms, travelers who wish to travel to the United States will have to take a Covid-19 screening test within 3 days before their flight. The test will be required when boarding: it is therefore the airlines that will be responsible for enforcing this new rule.
Once in the United States, travelers will have to remain confined to their homes for 7 days and undergo a second test for Covid-19 within 3 to 5 days of their arrival.
“Testing does not eliminate all risk,” says Robert R. Redfield, director of the CDC, “but when combined with a period of stay at home and daily precautions like mask wearing and social distancing , they can make travel safer, reducing the spread of the virus on planes, at airports and at destinations. “
