Covid-19 Survivors in the UK Now Suffer from Hearing Loss

LONDON – A number of patients who were declared cured of Covid-19 in the UK it is known to have hearing problems. Doctors are now gathering data to address this new problem.

Researchers from the University of Manchester and the Manchester Center for Biomedical Research, collected data from 24 studies that identified a link between the coronavirus and hearing and vestibular problems. Quoting Express.co.uk , of those who are infected Covid-19 , scientists estimate 7.6 percent have hearing loss. Meanwhile, another 14.8 percent are thought to have tinnitus, ringing in the ears, and around 7.2 percent are believed to have vertigo.

Professor Kevin Munro, director of the Manchester Center for Audiology and Deafness, said if it is true that between 7 – 15 percent of people with Covid-19 experience these symptoms, of course this problem is very serious to be addressed immediately. “There are major implications for clinical services going forward,” he said.

Paul Johnson (53) who was hospitalized because of Covid-19 in December and told Sky that she has been struggling with tinnitus ever since.

In July last year, Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, conducted a telephone survey, they found that out of 10 people who had been treated for the coronavirus, two had hearing problems.

Of the 121 adults who were admitted to hospital, 16 or 13.2 percent said their hearing had deteriorated after being discharged. Eight people reported a decrease in their hearing and another eight reported a tinnitus-type sound that was not caused by an external source. Prof. Munro said doctors already know that viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis can cause hearing loss and the coronavirus can damage nerves that carry information to and from the brain. “There is a possibility, in theory, that Covid-19 can cause problems in the auditory system, including the middle ear or cochlea, “he explained.
