Vitamin C and D are said to be particularly effective against Covid-19, a new study shows.
Dietary supplements that contain vitamins C and D and other micronutrients are safe, effective, and inexpensive ways to help the immune system fight Covid-19 and other acute respiratory diseases, according to a study led by Oregon State University.
Diet ust “fuel” for immune function
Occasionally there are doses that are above the recommended amounts. According to researcher Adrian Gombart, public health officials should give advice on how to prevent the spread of infections in addition to washing hands and vaccinations.
According to Gombart, more than 2.5 million people worldwide die from acute respiratory infections each year. A large amount of data now shows the importance of good nutrition for supporting the immune system. Specific vitamins, minerals and fatty acids played a crucial role in this. Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids in fish and docosahexaenoic acid are particularly important for the immune function.
Strengthen resilience
According to the expert, the importance of vitamin C and D for the immune system has been particularly well researched. Vitamin D is important in various areas of the immune system. This includes the growth and function of immune cells and the production of antibodies. Vitamin D affects the reactions of the immune system to infections.
According to Gombart, many people don’t get enough of these nutrients. “This could destroy our resistance to infections. This will lead to an increase in diseases and all the stresses that go with it.” The researchers are therefore pushing not just for the daily intake of a multivitamin, but 200 milligrams or more of vitamin C and 2,000 international units of vitamin D. These doses are significantly higher than the 75 milligrams recommended for men and 50 milligrams for women.
