The aim is to limit the spread of the Delta variant

Australia’s largest city, Sydney, will enter a new strict lockdown on Saturday night in an attempt to limit the rapid spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, Reuters reported, citing New South Wales Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklyan.

Experts: The spread of the “Delta” version of COVID-19 in our country is inevitable

More than a million people in the city center and eastern suburbs are already under lock-in due to the new wave, but health authorities have said quarantine needs to be extended to increase COVID-19 cases in new areas.

The restrictions in Sydney, home to more than five million people, are the latest in a series of brief but stringent quarantine measures imposed in Australian cities in recent months.
