Alsfeld(pm). The increase in corona diseases in recent weeks has also affected the Vogelsberg district. In good time before this development, the management of the Vogelsbergkreis Hospital in Alsfeld (KKA) expanded the Covid 19 ward. In the beginning, six rooms with a maximum of twelve beds were available for Covid patients in ward 5c. Due to the increasing number of cases, the Covid ward has now been expanded to 20 beds. In the meantime, the district hospital had up to 23 Covid patients on the ward, currently there are ten.
Experience with the corona pandemic over the past few months has been incorporated into the far-reaching organizational and technical improvements. On the one hand, the infection protection of the staff at the Corona ward has been increased: A separate staff entrance, changing room and shower, a separate lounge and ward office as well as separate delivery of food and drinks for the staff ensure increased infection protection.
Personal flexibel
Technically, the expanded corona station was equipped with a sonography device in order to reduce internal transport. In this way, the ultrasound examinations of organs can be carried out directly on the ward and the hygiene risk that always exists during transport can be reduced.
A blood gas analysis device is also available directly on the ward for measuring extensive blood values.
In addition, mobile monitors were connected, which – as in the intensive care unit – record the EKG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation in the blood via pulse oximetry and, if necessary, the body temperature.
The measurement results are visibly transmitted to a central monitor in the lounge and work room, which triggers alarms in the event of deviating findings. The monitoring of critically ill corona patients is significantly improved.
The nursing staff was adapted to the expanded treatment areas. With an occupancy of twelve patients, two qualified nurses and auxiliary staff were initially deployed on early and late shifts. As the number of patients increased, the occupation in the nursing service was adjusted accordingly. The high level of flexibility of the nursing staff enables the key to be adjusted at short notice and thus ensures patient care on this ward.
In addition, an electronic data document for the patient file is now being created specifically for the corona process. Clinical findings, the course of the disease, discussions with relatives, preparation of care after the acute phase of illness and a lot more are stored by the nursing and medical staff so that important information about those suffering from corona can be viewed at any time from all workplaces in the hospital.
Of course, even under the required hygienic isolation conditions for the entertainment of the patients and the contact with relatives and friends, the television and telephone connections remain fully intact, the hospital announced.
