Covid-19 spreads in schools and workplaces / Article / LSM.lv

After several positive analyzes of Covid-19 for teachers, Riga Natalija Draudziņa Secondary School is switching to model C, or learning completely remotely. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) acknowledges that the spread of Covid-19 in educational institutions and workplaces is currently a worrying trend.

According to the Covid-19 positive analysis of the information currently available to the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of the Riga City Council, more than 20 teachers have been identified, thus a decision has been made to set distance learning for the whole school, Riga City Council informed.

The department draws attention to the fact that schools must follow the recommendations of the SPCC for educational institutions in their daily work.

“I invite all school leaders of Riga Municipality to carefully assess the need for school teachers to gather in person, choosing alternative options – to organize meetings or other joint activities remotely, using other means of communication. We will be responsible for our own safety and the safety of our fellow human beings, ”says Maris Krastins, Director of the Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Riga City Council.

Pēteris Ševčenko, the director of Natalija Draudziņa Secondary School, admitted to Latvian Radio that the transition to a remote model was organized already when the children arrived at school: “The negative results of the test came already last night. Those who came this morning were positive. And then, of course, the work started very intensively, as the school switched to the distance learning model. I was at home today as a possible contact person and I organized it all from home. ”

Yuri Perevoshchikov, a spokesman for the SPKC, admitted at a press conference on Friday, October 9, that in recent days the center has been working intensively with two foci in schools – in one case teachers took part in a bus tour and the disease spread rapidly during and after the tour. 42 tests have been performed, of which at least 20 were positive.

In the second case, children and school staff became infected, and the infected children participated in interest education groups and sports events, and secondary cases of infection were already known to members of the group attending another school, as well as cases in the sports team.

This is one negative example of an infected child continuing to attend an educational institution, thus helping the disease to spread.

Perevoshchikov reiterated that it is very important that people with symptoms of the disease do not visit workplaces and educational institutions, adding that schools should also think about limiting the spread of the infection.

He also called on employers to think about using masks and making the most of telework.
