Rwanda’s health ministry inaugurated a new treatment center for COVID-19 patients in Kigali on Friday as part of its efforts to manage an expected increase in cases after the holiday season.
“The new facility located at Nyarugenge district hospital is expected to significantly improve the management of COVID-19 cases, offering the highest level of oxygen therapy,” said Rwanda Biomedical Center Director General Sabin Nsanzimana, on national television.
Many critically ill patients in Kigali and its surroundings will be admitted to this new facility, he said, adding that it had a capacity of around 140 beds for critically ill patients placed in intensive care. .
Efforts are underway to set up intensive care treatment centers in all provinces of the country, Nsanzimana added.
Rwanda has recently witnessed an increase in new cases. The new facility is expected to relieve pressure on the Kanyinya treatment center located in the same district which has a capacity of 70 to 80 beds for COVID-19 patients.
As of Friday, Rwanda had recorded 9,368 cases of COVID-19, with 6,940 healings and 115 deaths.
