Covid-19 Risks Triggering Neurological Problems, Including Bell’s Palsy

Suara.com – A new study finds that infected corona virus Covid-19 can lead to greater risks and complications neurological rare, including Bell’s palsy, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and hemorrhagic stroke.

According to research, a person’s risk of suffering from this rare neurological problem due to the Covid-19 corona virus is much higher than the risk of injections Covid-19 vaccine.

Previously, research showed that people who inject the AstraZeneca vaccine have a high risk of developing Bell’s palsy and Guillain-Barre syndrome within 28 days of receiving the first dose. Meanwhile, people who inject the Pfizer vaccine are at high risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

The researchers found that the two Covid-19 vaccines could result in an increase in certain neurological complications after the first or second dose.

However, new research suggests that infection with the Covid-19 coronavirus actually causes a person to have a higher risk of developing neurological problems.

The study’s lead author and medical statistician, Martina Patone, found different risks for different types of neurological conditions, depending on the Covid-19 vaccine each person received.

“But, the risk of neurological problems due to the Covid-19 vaccine is much lower than when someone is infected with the Covid-19 corona virus,” said Martina Patone. Express.

This study assessed a person’s risk of developing neurological complications within 28 days after the injection of the first dose of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines as well as 28 days after a person tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus.

“We estimate 145 excess cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome per 10 million people within 28 days of being infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus, compared with 38 per 10 million for those who received the ChAdOx1nCoV-19 or AstraZeneca vaccine,” he explained.

Bell’s palsy is a temporary weakness or lack of movement on one side of your face. According to the NHS, most people who suffer from this neurological problem will improve after 9 months.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare and serious neurological condition that affects the nerves, causing problems such as numbness, weakness and pain. This syndrome is treatable and most people who are affected eventually make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the skull bursts and bleeds in or around the brain. This condition can be treated with drugs or surgery.

“This neurological complication is very rare, but awareness or vigilance of this is very important for patient care during mass vaccination programs around the world,” said doctor Lahiru Handunnetthi.
