In the northern hospitals, we start to perceive the consequences of the fourth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic with hospitalizations in resuscitation who are leaving on the rise in mid-August 2021. We take stock of the latest figures for the epidemic in Nord and Pas-de-Calais.
An epidemic that continues to gain ground
The virus is circulating more and more in the two departments. As of August 11, 2021, in the North, there were 178 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (against 113 two weeks ago) and 103 per 100,000 in Pas-de-Calais (73 two weeks ago).
The epidemic is certainly gaining ground, but this progression remains relatively contained compared to the departments of southern France.
It is always among young people that the virus is most present. In the North, the incidence rate is 328 for 20-29 year olds, and 277 for 30-39 year olds. We also see that children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 are particularly affected with an incidence of 234.
In Pas-de-Calais, the incidence among 20-29 year olds is twice as high as in the general population.
As for the mutations of the virus, the Delta variant still remains very largely in the majority among the new contaminations (more than 96% of the tests screened).
An increase in resuscitation in the North
In hospitals in the North, this epidemic return is starting to be seen. After weeks of continued decline, hospitalizations tend to level off. There were 303 Covid patients in northern hospitals on August 14.
In Pas-de-Calais, hospitalizations continue to decline continuously, but in a more contained manner, dropping from 135 patients admitted on August 4, to 128 ten days later.
In the North, it is especially in intensive care that we are starting to see a change. While since last April, the number of Covid patients admitted to critical care has been steadily declining, it is gradually rising. From 31 patients in intensive care on July 28, it rose to 53 hospitalized patients in these units on August 14.
In Pas-de-Calais, the situation is stable in the intensive care units, with around fifteen patients.
Who are the hospitalized patients?
Among the patients hospitalized for Covid in Hauts-de-France, we find a majority of people rather aged over 60 years. Younger age groups, however, represent a non-negligible proportion of admitted patients, especially 40-60 year olds.
Vaccination is still continuing. As of August 11, more than 3.3 million people have been fully vaccinated in Hauts-de-France (out of nearly 6 million inhabitants). The ARS reports that two-thirds of those over 12 in the region are fully immunized.
