(COVID-19) Racial and ethnic disparities persist in outpatient care, says CDC – Xinhua English.news.cn

WASHINGTON, Oct.27 (Xinhua) – Racial and ethnic disparities persist in outpatient treatment of COVID-19 in the United States, according to a new study released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

These disparities exist in all age groups and in immunocompromised patients, it reads. Between April and July 2022, the percentage of patients aged 20 or older with the novel coronavirus treated with Paxlovid was 36% and 30% lower in African American and Hispanic patients, respectively, than in white and non-Hispanic patients.

Paxlovid is the most frequently prescribed COVID drug and preferred outpatient care for eligible patients.

It appears that these observed disparities are due to several factors, according to the CDC study.

People living in counties where poverty rates remain high and populated predominantly by African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, or Alaskans are less likely to have access to treatment centers for COVID-19, he says. end
