TOKYO, KOMPAS.com – A patient Covid-19 of Japan reported successfully got transplant lungs from living donors.
The recipient, identified as a woman from the Kansai region, recovered after undergoing an 11-hour operation on Wednesday (7/4/2021).
According to a statement by the Kyoto University Hospital, her husband and son, who are donors, are in stable condition.

The university stated as reported AP via Channel News Asia Friday (9/4/2021), the woman became the world’s first transplant from a living donor.
The woman received lung tissue from her family, because her lungs were damaged by Covid-19.
Transplant using a dead donor is rare in Japan. So, a living giver is the best option.
Dr Hiroshi Date, a thoracic surgeon who led the operation team said that lung grafts can also be done from a living donor.
“I think this will be a very encouraging treatment for patients,” Dr Date told a news conference.
Kyoto University explained, transplants from brain-dead donors to patients corona virus already implemented in the US, Europe and China.

The patient, who was not identified, contracted the coronavirus at the end of last year and had difficulty breathing.
Due to his severe condition, he was put on a life support machine for three months after his lungs were badly damaged.
Even after being tested negative, his lungs were deemed damaged and could no longer be treated.
Therefore, the only way that the woman could stay alive was to have a lung transplant.

Her husband and son volunteered, with the operation being performed by 30 medical teams led by Dr. Date.
The husband reportedly gave him part of his left lung, while the child gave him the right.
The university explained that the woman could be allowed to go home after two months of treatment, and carry out normal activities in the third month.
