The four public prosecutor’s offices in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are investigating suspected fraud in connection with Corona emergency aid in 369 cases. That was eleven more than at the beginning of January, as the Justice Ministry in Schwerin announced on request. During this period, according to the information, five proceedings were added to the Rostock public prosecutor’s office, four in Schwerin and one each in Neubrandenburg and Stralsund.
If there was a disbursement of emergency aid, the possible damage is between 340 and 27,000 euros. One case, which is still being investigated by the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor, concerns possible damage of 280,000 euros in connection with a so-called corona loan from the state development bank KfW. The amount of damage from all cases cannot be quantified.
350 million euros in emergency aid in MV
According to the information, most of the proceedings are still ongoing. 23 proceedings have so far been discontinued due to a lack of sufficient suspicion, charges have been brought in five cases and an application has been made in three further penal orders. Ten cases have been transferred to other federal states because of regional jurisdiction. “Unfortunately there are always people who want to criminally exploit such exceptional situations. The public prosecutor’s offices are meticulously following up the suspected cases, ”said Justice Minister Katy Hoffmeister (CDU).

The federal and state governments had decided on numerous aid programs for the economy since the beginning of the corona pandemic last year. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, for example, around 350 million euros flowed as emergency aid in the northeast, and more than 43,000 applications were submitted.
