Covid-19 Pandemic Aggravates the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

YOGYAKARTA, Suaramerdeka.com Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the world. Every year, 18.6 million deaths are recorded with this disease.

The causes range from smoking, diabetes, hypertension, obesity to air pollution. Less common conditions such as Chagas disease, and cardiac amyloidosis can also be triggers.

“In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, 520 million people in the world living with cardiovascular disease are in a very worrying condition. They are more at risk of experiencing severe disease,” said the Chair of the Association of Specialist Doctors Cardiovascular Indonesia (Perki) Yogyakarta Branch Irsad Andi Arso, Tuesday 28 September 2021.

Commemorating World Heart Day on September 29, he invites the public to raise awareness about the risks of cardiovascular disease including heart disease and stroke. Carrying the theme Use Heart to Connect, this slogan encourages everyone to take care of their heart as best they can.

One way is by utilizing digital technology for disease management.

“Telehealth has an important role in this pandemic era. The health crisis makes us aware of finding different and innovative ways to connect people with access to heart health,” he explained.

It is hoped that by educating the public about controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical activity, at least 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke can be avoided.
