On the immunization front, the pace has picked up everywhere, especially since eligibility was extended to children aged 5 to 11.
Just over 80% of the total population of Northern Ontario received at least 1 dose of the vaccine, and almost 79% received two.
At least 24,840 third dose were also administered. This does not include the Porcupine, North Bay-Parry Sound and Northwestern health districts which do not publish this information.
Sudbury & Districts Public Health reported 62 new cases, the largest increase in a single day since November 19.
This public health unit also added 23 healings, bringing the number of active cases to 324 in this sector.
As of December 2, Horizon Santé-Nord hospital had 20 patients with COVID-19, including 8 in intensive care.
In addition, Horizon Santé-Nord recently fired 53 unvaccinated employees.
The District of Algoma continues to have the highest number of active cases among health regions in Northern Ontario, with 371.
Algoma Public Health on Thursday reported 19 new cases, 9 new recoveries and 2 more hospitalizations, for a total of 11.
Further west, the Thunder Bay district has 100 active cases of COVID-19, including 13 new cases, and 6 recoveries.
Only one person tested positive for COVID-19 is hospitalized in this region.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit also recommends that area residents, vaccinated or not, avoid non-essential travel to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
These states, located near the Thunder Bay area, have some of the highest infection rates across the border right now.
The North Bay-Parry Sound District Public Health Unit has recorded 7 new cases and 3 recoveries.
The situation appears to be improving in the district of Timiskaming, with just one new case on Thursday. As of Sunday, Timiskaming Health Services (SST) has reported 15 cases and 52 recoveries.
In comparison, there were 52 cases identified by the SST
between Sunday November 21 and Thursday November 25, and 72 for the whole of last week.The two districts with the fewest active cases currently in the North are Porcupine and North West.
The Northwestern Health Unit reported two new cases and as many recoveries, while the Porcupine Health Unit reported a first case in three days and one recovery.
