COVID-19: Ontario continues to flirt with 10,000 cases per day

Just over 10,000 Ontarians a day have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past 48 hours, Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Sunday.

Like Quebec, the most populous province in the country has lost control over the spread of the Omicron variant, so that 9,826 cases of COVID-19 have been identified using tests carried out during Christmas day.

The day before, 10,412 Ontarians who chose to have a test on the sidelines of New Year’s Eve were found to be carrying the virus.

The number of deaths attributable to the virus was not disclosed by the minister.

While the virus did not take Christmas time off, the vaccinators also remained at their posts, as more than 106,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were injected into the arms of Ontarians in the past two days.

Another province heavily affected by the Omicron variant, Nova Scotia has recorded 1,147 more infections in the past two days, the overwhelming majority in the central part of the province, where Halifax is located. However, no deaths have been reported.

“Due to a skyrocketing number of tests and cases, there are delays in the follow-up carried out by Public Health,” said the government of the province of the Maritimes.

The vast majority of provinces did not release updated pandemic data on Sunday due to the Christmas holidays.
