The numbers are enough to make you dizzy. While the variant Omicron has now supplanted Delta everywhere in France, contamination is exploding to a level never seen since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19 in Upper Garonne.
Haute-Garonne, department where the virus circulates the most
Proof of the hegemonic domination of this new variant? Omicron, which is much more contagious but less virulent than the other strains, is now present in 98.2% of screenings made to detect it. Still in the majority a little over a month ago, the Delta variant only represents1.8% of positive cases in Haute-Garonne.
And the progression of contamination is advancing at a dizzying pace since, as of January 20, 2022, the incidence increased by 40% within a week in Haute-Garonne, which is the department where the virus is currently circulating the most in metropolitan France.
The incidence rate there is 4,745 positive cases/100,000 inhabitants. As for the positivity rate, it is 33.1%, which means that one in three tests is positive in the department. Concretely, 9495 positive cases are identified every day in Haute-Garonne.

Mind-boggling numbers in children
And in some age groups, the numbers are even higher: the incidence rate is thus 6882 among 0-9 year olds and of more than 8598 among 10-19 year olds.
A sign that the virus is currently circulating particularly in schools: 353 classes were also closed in the department, Friday January 21 (and 716 in the Toulouse Academy). Two weeks earlier, 164 classes were closed… throughout the Toulouse academy.
Direct consequence: the children bring the virus home and infect the parents. The incidence rate also increases very sharply in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Enough to accredit the thesis developed by the Constitutional Council: “The fifth wave, linked to the Omicron variant, remains at a very high level at the national level, with an epidemic resurgence possibly linked to the resumption of school life”, indicated the body. in its opinion published on January 19.
In Toulouse, an incidence rate of nearly 5,000
A Toulouse, the incidence rate also rose sharply to reach 4935 positive cases / 100,000 inhabitants in the metropolis. Toulouse is therefore now the metropolis where the virus circulates the most, ahead of Lille (4,702), Lyon (4,632), Strasbourg (4,470) and Saint-Etienne (4,465).
Outbreak of cases in several departments of Occitania
Note that Haute-Garonne is not the only territory of Occitania affected by this outbreak of cases. The virus is circulating everywhere in Occitania. Some figures: in the Tarn, the incidence (3644) increased by 51.2% in one week. In the Tarn-et-Garonne (3733), this increase is 67.1%. There is also a very strong circulation of the virus in the Gers (2848, +53.2% in one week) and in Ariège (3171, +60.9%).

What impact on the hospital system?
Inevitably, due to this outbreak of positive cases, the hospital system is under tension in Haute-Garonne, even if the Omicron variant is much less virulent than the Delta variant.
Sunday January 23, 2022, 487 people who contracted Covid-19 were hospitalized in the clinics and hospitals of the department. Such a level had never been reached since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, even if we now know that hospitalizations are often shorter and less serious with the appearance of the Omicron variant.
Among these hospitalized patients, 105 were in intensive care, even if these are beginning to decrease very slightly. Here again, in terms of resuscitation, we are at the level of the peaks of the previous waves.
And in terms of deaths
Figures to compare with the number of people vaccinated against Covid-19 in Haute-Garonne. According to official data, as of January 20, 2021, 1 051 550 people had received two doses in the department, and 660 672 received a booster dose.
Conversely, there are still ten days, the ARS indicated that “just under 200,000 people” were still not vaccinated in Haute-Garonne.
And deaths are on the rise, they remain at lower levels than before the arrival of vaccines, which, it should be remembered, provide effective protection against serious forms of the disease. Currently, there are an average of three daily deaths in hospital in Haute-Garonne, where 1035 deaths have been identified since March 2020.
