The show was set to be one of the first big business events of the year at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, which this year mainly served as a giant vaccination center.
But “circumstances have changed in the last few weeks, and more particularly the last few days, and it is more difficult to create an event that meets the expectations of our customers”, wrote Mark Schienberg, head of the organization. , in a message.
“As custodians of the 121-year-old New York Auto Show, we owe it to ourselves to provide a safe environment for all visitors, exhibitors and the thousands of men and women who organize the event.” , he stressed.
However, the organizers were showing enthusiasm as the show approached.
“All the signs were positive and the show had to make a comeback even stronger than ever,” noted Mr. Schienberg. “It’s a different story today. “
Faced with the resurgence in the number of cases of COVID-19, attributable to the Delta variant, local authorities have been increasing the announcements of new restriction measures for the past two weeks.
On Tuesday, the Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio announced that proof of vaccination will soon be required to go to restaurants, theaters or sports, with the first checks scheduled for mid-September.
He also “strongly” encouraged the population, vaccinated or not, to wear a mask again in closed spaces.
Other events are still planned at the Javits Center in the coming weeks, including a jewelry fair.
