Covid-19 / Neurological impact: Scientists warn of brain damage wave

Scientists warned this Wednesday, July 8, against a potential wave of brain damage related to Coronaviruses. Because new evidence suggests that Covid-19 can cause serious neurological complications, including inflammation, psychosis and delirium.

The brain vulnerability of Covid patients

A study by researchers at the University College of London described 43 cases of patients with Covid-19 who suffered from temporary brain dysfunction, stroke, nerve damage or other serious brain effects.

The research builds on recent studies that have also found that the disease can damage the brain.

Comparison with the 1918 flu epidemic

“It remains to be seen whether we will see a large-scale epidemic of pandemic-related brain damage, perhaps similar to the lethargic encephalitis epidemic in the 1920s and 1930s after the 1918 flu pandemic,” said Michael Zandi, of the London Institute of Neurology, who co-directed the study.

Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, is largely a respiratory disease that affects the lungs, but neuroscientists and brain scientists say there is concern about new evidence of its impact on the brain.

The concern of a neuroscientist

“My concern is that we now have millions of people with Covid-19. And if in a year we have 10 million people recovered, and these people have cognitive deficits, then that will affect their ability to work and their ability to go about their daily activities ”, Adrian Owen, neuroscientist at Western University of Canada said Reuters in an interview.
