COVID-19: Minsa announces that Pfizer vaccines will arrive in the first half of January for children from 5 to 11 years old


The head of the Ministry of Health, Hernando Cevallos, announced this Wednesday that an agreement was reached with the laboratory Pfizer, which has already been approved by the General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid), to begin next year with the vaccination of children from 5 to 11 years.

During a press conference of the Council of Ministers, he indicated that “in the first half of January we will have the vaccines to be able to apply” to said age group.

He also pointed out that, as has been the case with previous batches, these will be distributed almost immediately as they arrive in the country.

As is known, vaccines of Pfizer for younger children they are different from those currently used for adults.

“Meanwhile, we firmly maintain the goal of reaching almost 80% (of the vaccinated population) by the end of the year, which puts us, according to the percentage of the population that has the Peru, in the first countries in Latin America to reach these levels of vaccination, “the minister stressed.

Vaccination advance

He highlighted that in the case of people over 60 years of age, who make up the group at greatest risk compared to COVID-19, “82% of the vaccinated population has already passed.”

At the national level, Hernando Cevallos pointed out that 72.77% of the target population is already vaccinated with two doses, and 84.92% are vaccinated with one. This means that more than 45.4 million doses have already been applied in the country.

“Where we still have a significant delay is in the application of the third dose,” he said and urged citizens to continue going to the immunization centers for the missing doses.

Currently, the target population is made up of people over 12 years of age, totaling 28,024,250 in the country.
