The government in early November ordered the removal of all the mink, which are raised on fur farms in Denmark – about 15 million mink were slaughtered. The country has the largest fur industry in the European Union. A new mutation in the coronavirus was detected in the animals, which also infected several people.
The mink were buried in mass graves, which caused concern. One of the burial sites is located next to the lake, but another is located near the drinking water source. In addition, the court found that the disposal of the mink was illegal.
Opposition has now called for the bodies of animals to be excavated and stored in special manure containers as a safer method of disposal.
The government itself has acknowledged that the slaughter of mink has not been well organized. Meanwhile, legal experts at local TV2 explained that the government had disposed of the mink in a mass grave without receiving an environmental assessment.
Environment Minister Tea Vermelin said in parliament on Friday that mass burials were not the best way to get rid of the bodies, that it would have been better to burn them, but the spread of Covid-19 in mink farms made it necessary to get rid of them urgently and there was no other option than speed. get rid of them.
The outrage over the disposal of the mink has already led to the resignation of Agriculture Minister Mogens Jensen last week.
There are about 1,100 mink farms in Denmark and no agreement has yet been reached on compensation for fur farmers.
