The toll of the Covid-19 pandemic is heavy … and it is not over, especially in the large emerging countries. Globally, there have been at least 3,513,088 deaths since the end of 2019, for more than 168,905,450 officially diagnosed cases of infection. Figures which are however only a pale reflection of reality, because they exclude the revisions carried out a posteriori by certain statistical organizations, which conclude with a much more important number of deaths. The WHO even estimates, taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, that the results of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially recorded. A large proportion of the less serious or asymptomatic cases also remain undetected despite the intensification of screening in many countries.
On Thursday, 12,736 new deaths and 586,617 new cases were recorded worldwide. The countries that have recorded the most new deaths in their latest reports are India with 3,660 new deaths, Brazil (2,245) and the United States (1,234). The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 593,288 deaths for 33,218,046 cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
