Covid-19: Latvia still has the third highest mortality rate among the EU and EEA countries

Last week, Latvia still had the third highest mortality rate with Covid-19 among the countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), according to data compiled by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).

The data show that although Covid-19 infection has continued to decline in Europe, Latvia’s position has not changed much. ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 11 to 24 April show that the mortality rate from diagnosed Covid-19 in Latvia was 48.1 cases per million population, and in this indicator Latvia has remained in the 3rd place among the EU and EEA countries.

A higher mortality rate of 66.3 cases per million population is recorded in Greece and 50.4 in Malta.

The average mortality rate diagnosed with Covid-19 in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks was 19.2 cases per million population.

In Estonia, the mortality rate in the previous two weeks was 26.3 cases per million population, and it is currently in 11th place. Lithuania, on the other hand, has a death toll of 7.9 per million inhabitants and is currently ranked 25th in the 30 EU / EEA countries after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 11 to 24 April also show that the cumulative incidence of Covid-19 per 100,000 population in Latvia was 449.9 and that Latvia has risen from 20th to 18th place in the EU and EEA. .

Latvia has reached the top place due to the fact that in a number of other countries the incidence rate has decreased faster.

In the EU / EEA, the average 14-day incidence of Covid-19 is 1,013.6 cases per 100,000 population.

In the past week, 543.3 cases per 100,000 population remained in 14th place with an incidence rate of 458.1 cases per 100,000 population in Estonia, remaining 17th out of 30 EU / EEA countries.

The highest incidence in the EU / EEA in the last two weeks has been in France, with 2,057.2 cases per 100,000 population. It is followed by Germany with 1777.1 and Luxembourg with 1566 cases per 100,000 population.

In the last two weeks in Latvia, the infection rate among the population aged 65 and over has also decreased to 414.8 cases per 100,000 population. The EU / EEA average is 973 cases per 100,000 population.

In the previous week in the EU / EEA, the proportion of patients infected with Covid-19 in hospitals was 19.9 per 100,000 population. In Latvia, this indicator was 21.2 cases during the previous week.
