As the level of Covid-19 infection continues to grow in Latvia, but in many other European countries as the incidence decreases, Latvia has risen to the fifth place among the 30 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries with the highest level of Covid-19 infection. data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
In addition, Latvia’s neighbor Lithuania is in first place in terms of morbidity, while Estonia is in third place. Latvia has one of the lowest vaccination coverage against Covid-19 in Europe, and neighboring countries are not among the leaders in terms of vaccination.
Last week, Latvia was in the 6th place in the “top” of the disease, but before that – in the 12th place.
ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 13 to 26 September show that the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population in Latvia has risen to 398 cases.
The highest incidence rates in the EU and EEA countries are in Lithuania – 645.7 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Slovenia with 627 cases and Estonia with 529.9 cases. Romania is in the fourth place with a slightly higher incidence rate than in Latvia – 398.9 cases per 100,000 population.
The lowest incidence rate is in Poland with 25.7 cases per 100,000 population. The average incidence rate in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks is 147.1 cases per 100,000 population.
In Latvia, the 14-day mortality rate with diagnosed Covid-19 has also increased and at the end of the previous week it was 39.3 cases per one million inhabitants. Among the EU and EEA countries, Latvia ranks sixth in this respect.
The highest mortality rate from diagnosed Covid-19 per million population in the past two weeks was in Bulgaria – 139.1 cases, followed by Lithuania with 80.5 cases. In Estonia, the corresponding figure is 24.8 cases.
Latvia is still in the red zone of the ECDC travel warning card, which indicates to travelers a high risk of Covid-19 infection.-
In turn, Estonia and Lithuania have reached the dark red area of these maps, which indicates a very high risk of infection. Apart from Latvia’s neighbors, only Slovenia and some regions in Romania are located in this area.
