Switzerland detects a possible omicron case and imposes quarantines on 19 countries
Swiss health authorities reported a possible case of the omicron variant, the first detected in the country, and have raised to 19 the nations and territories whose travelers will have to quarantine when entering the Swiss country, national television RTS highlighted on Monday . The suspected case is a person who returned from South Africa a week ago, the Federal Office of Public Health said in a short message on its official Twitter account. The list of territories from which it requires quarantine, which Switzerland began to apply this weekend, includes countries in southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe), but also European nations such as Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Denmark, and also Australia, Egypt or Israel, among others. Albares assures that none of the Spaniards trapped in several countries by the new omicron variant “is going to be stranded”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, affirmed this Monday that his department will spare no time or effort to bring back Spaniards who are trapped in different countries, such as South Africa, without being able to return to cause of the restrictions due to the appearance of the omicron variant of covid-19. This was underlined in an interview on TVE, during which he stated that yesterday he carried out “a mapping” with the consular teams and with the different embassies, of the Spaniards who are currently unable to return, and estimated that there are more than 200 citizens distributed among the different countries, but the bulk is in South Africa, a country in which there are about 150 at the moment.
