Congress decides this Tuesday whether to validate the mandatory use of masks outdoors
The plenary session of Congress will host this Tuesday the debate to validate the decree law that requires the use of masks in open spaces and that the Government approved due to the rise in coronavirus infections due to the omicron variant, a measure highly questioned by the opposition, but that the Executive trusts that it will go ahead, among other things, because the rule also includes measures on the hiring of toilets and pensions that make it difficult for groups outside the Government to vote against it. The Constitution gives a period of 30 business days for the Chamber to ratify the decree laws, which are in force since their publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE), but if they do not receive the endorsement of the Plenary of Congress, they are repealed.
Congress must rule on the decree regarding masks by February 1 at the latest. That is why the debate has been included in the agenda of the plenary session on Tuesday, late in the afternoon, and it has not been possible to wait to debate it on Thursday, when initiatives of this type are traditionally discussed, and when, in fact, , two others will be discussed, including the one on labor reform.
For now, the PP has already advanced that it does not intend to support the decree and Vox and Ciudadanos have already advanced their rejection of the return of the masks, a position to which Foro Asturias and Unión del Pueblo Navarro are expected to join. And, among the usual parliamentary partners of the Government, ERC, PNV and EH Bildu, they prefer to reserve the meaning of their vote. The imposition of masks in the open air even without a safety distance also received criticism from formations such as Compromís and Más País, which could opt for abstention, as well as other usual partners of the Government, according to what parliamentary sources have advanced to Europa Press.
