Germany confirms more than 140,000 infections and breaks a new daily record

The German health authorities have confirmed today a total of 140,160 coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, for which it breaks its record for daily infections again this week. Germany, which started this week registering 34,000 positives, has quadrupled its cases in just five days, although it is true that compared to the previous day the increase is less than 7,000 infections. The country is immersed in a new wave of infections, a fact that is even more palpable considering that the record for daily infections has been broken for the third consecutive day. This has been confirmed by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German government entity in charge of the control of infectious diseases, which, in its daily balance, has confirmed that, with these data, the 8.46 million positives have already been exceeded since start of the pandemic.

On the other hand, the RKI has noted another 170 more deaths caused by the virus, bringing the total number to 116,485 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Likewise, the accumulated incidence during the last seven days continues with its unstoppable upward trend and is established at 706.3 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding this Thursday’s figure by almost 70 points (638.8). In the last week, health authorities have confirmed more than 587,300 cases. The German government approved last week the legal framework for the new quarantine regulations by which people who have received a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine “will not have to quarantine in case of being in close contact with a person infected by covid-19”. On the other hand, the vaccination process in Germany continues and 72% of the immunized population has already been exceeded, so the country is approaching the objective set by the Government of reaching 80% of the population by the end of January with at minus one dose.
