Enlargement | Hospital admissions due to covid increase in Catalonia

The number of people hospitalized for covid continues to increase in Catalonia, where epidemic data is also worsening and the impact that weekend Christmas celebrations may have on the number of infections is feared. As this weekend coincides with the two days of the traditional family meals in Catalonia, Christmas and San Esteban, the number of people who have undergone PCR tests has been much lower, but even so they have been notified in the last 24 hours 8,502 new confirmed positives, practically half of those notified the day before (17,051).

In total, the number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic already rises to 1,200,037 in Catalonia and the number of deaths to 24,453, nineteen of them notified in the last 24 hours. Hospital admissions are increasing both in the plant and in intensive care units. According to the incidence data updated this Sunday by the Department of Health, today there are 1,389 hospitalized with covid, 45 more than yesterday, of which 381, five more than yesterday, are seriously ill in the ICU, 241 of them intubated and 10 connected to the ECMO (extracorporeal respiration).

A year ago, on December 26, 2020, there were 337 admitted with covid in the ICUs of Catalan hospitals, a figure that increased in January to a peak in that wave of 731 on February 2. The difference with the wave of last Christmas is in mortality, now much lower. In the last seven days, 135 people have died as a result of covid-19, which represents 19 daily victims, a much lower mortality than the 310 deaths that occurred the same week last year, when vaccination had not yet started. As it was yesterday on Christmas Day, the primary care centers (CAP) only attended 9,352 people, compared to 42,123 the day before. The speed of spread of the virus (Rt) in Catalonia today is 1.41, five hundredths more than yesterday, which means that every 100 infected infect an average of 141 people. (Eph)
