COVID-19: it’s time for the bivalent vaccine

In strategic health centers of the Bahía Blanca district, bivalent vaccination against COVID-19 began this Friday the 3rd.

“It is a new awareness for the community. It is a reminder for those who had some doubts and who now have the possibility of accessing a comprehensive alternative,” said Ezequiel Jouglard, Undersecretary of Comprehensive Health Care of the local Municipality.

“Bivalent vaccines generate coverage for two types of virus. The original COVID-19, which was from the Chinese city of Wuhan; and the one that is circulating the most, which contains the Omicron strain,” she added.

“It is a vaccine that is used as a booster for those people who are on the full schedule from the age of 12,” he added.

Ezequiel Jouglard, Undersecretary of Comprehensive Health Care of the Municipality.

“Anyway, it is important to clarify that it is not used to start a scheme, because that is what the rest of the vaccines are for,” he said.

As has been the case up to now, the ideal is to go to a vaccination center to find out what scheme each one is in.

“The booster dose is always considered after four months with respect to the previous inoculation. In the case of the bivalent, it is the same”, explained Jouglard, who is a biochemist, has a Master’s in Epidemiology and a professor of Medicine at the National University of the South (UNS).

The 5,760 vaccines (from the Pzifer laboratory) arrived between this Wednesday and Thursday from the Ministry of Health of the Nation.

“What we do know is that, for those who already have 4 doses, the possibility of developing severe COVID is very low.”

“Half of the shipment (2,880) went to the vaccination clinics and the rest to the headquarters of the Community Health Secretariat, on Chiclana street, where we have freezers and cold rooms,” Jouglard said.

“Vaccines reach minus 80 degrees, they have to be sent to the cold chain and, from there, they go to refrigerators. Only then are they distributed. And from the refrigerator they have a life of 10 weeks ”, he explained.

Regarding the duration of the vaccine, Jouglard said that there are still no details.

“What we do know is that, for those who already have 4 doses, the possibility of developing severe COVID is very low,” he said.

In this sense, the most exposed people continue to be:

—Adult patients over 60 years of age.

—Patients with underlying diseases (comorbidities).

“Those people without the full schematic.

Regarding the situation in Bahía Blanca, the community official pointed out that in the last two weeks there have been almost no hospitalizations due to COVID-19.

“We had a six-week outbreak between this December and the first two weeks of January, but from then on the number of cases has been falling,” he explained.

“In that period we went from 1,000 people diagnosed to just 35 at the end of January. The reality is that, today, the circulation of the virus is very low, ”he said.
