The number of patients with COVID-19 it dropped today in Italy for the second consecutive day, with 107,709 people currently infected, 528 fewer than on Monday, indicates the last official balance sheet.
The authorities recorded 534 deaths in the last 24 hours, adding up to a total of 24,648 deaths since the pandemic began. Of the total contagions by SARS-CoV-2 recorded since the start of the pandemic 51,600 are cured, 2,723 more than on Monday, a record number of recovered, according to official data.
Hospitalized patients (772 less in 24 hours) and those in intensive care (102 less) also continue to decline.
“The virus is still with us, a little less strong, but it is there,” the Government’s high commissioner for managing the coronavirus crisis, Domenico Arcuri, had previously warned, while Prime Minister Guiseppe Conte announced that he will reveal “before the end of the week” his plan for the gradual exit from confinement, in force since March 9 and ending on May 3.
“I wish I could say ‘we reopened everything’. Immediately. We reopen starting tomorrow, ”wrote Conte today in a long message on his Facebook account. “But that would raise the contagion curve in an uncontrolled way and render all the efforts we have made so far in vain.”
Domenico Arcuri insisted on the same message: “Premature decisions should not be taken, we must be even more aware [dos riscos] and responsible ”. “As of May 4, we will be able to lighten certain measures, assess what is happening, and promote another small step week after week, but always watching what is happening,” said Silvio Brusaferro, president of the Instituto Superior de Saúde.
