Covid-19. Israelis are profiting from the crisis. Healthcare, hotels, delivery companies… – IsraelValley

Not all Israelis will have bad memories of the pandemic; as in any crisis, the Covid-19 has also made winners.

Of course, the health crisis has worsened inequalities and accentuated poverty; on the other hand, many Israelis have profited from the crisis by improving their lot, even by getting richer. An article by Jacques Bendelac (Copyrights).

A. The health sector : after years of public underinvestment in health, the pandemic has made it possible to reverse the trend.

In 2020, the state injected around 22 billion shekels into the health sector; it is an exceptional aid to deal with the pandemic (equipment, personnel, vaccines, etc.) and to relieve the deficit budget of public hospitals.

The pharmaceutical sector was also one of the winners of the health crisis: in 2020, sales of drugs, surgical masks and other medical accessories experienced exceptional growth.

B. Containment hotels : If local and foreign tourism plunged in 2020, the hotels requisitioned by the State to serve as places of containment have managed to withstand the crisis.

At the height of the pandemic, the Israeli government made agreements with hotels dedicated to containment against Covid; in total, five hotels spread across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv have received nearly half a billion shekels from the state to transform into containment centers.

C. Delivery companies : confinement requires, distance purchases have replaced consumption on the spot, allowing home delivery companies to hold on, or even to prosper.

Throughout the pandemic, electronic commerce has experienced strong growth; many businesses (especially in restaurants) have temporarily converted to home delivery, before returning to their usual activity upon exiting confinement.

The boom in online ordering and door-to-door delivery activities has accelerated competition: it has intensified between Israeli take-away companies (like 10bis) and multinationals (like Wolt), for the greater good of the world. consumer.
