Jakarta –
The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia is slowly starting to subside. However, it turns out that the impact of the COVID-19 infection continues to be felt for some people.
One of them, there is a risk of developing diabetes even though they have recovered from COVID-19 after several months. The cause is the Corona virus which inhibits insulin production, thereby increasing the risk of diabetes.
Quoted from Live Science, Tuesday (14/2), COVID-19 is associated with cases of type one and type two diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the COVID-19 virus attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Meanwhile, the body still produces insulin in type two diabetes. However, often the amount of insulin is insufficient and the body does not respond well to it.
Research led by dr. James Lo, physician, scientist and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York found that SARS-CoV-2 can damage fat cells and change their function. These changes in function can contribute to the onset of diabetes in some people.
Fat cells that are not functioning result in much less adiponectin production. It is known, adiponectin and insulin work synergistically to regulate blood sugar. This condition can cause a person to become resistant to insulin because adiponectin is not enough to make cells sensitive to insulin.
In addition, another study conducted at Heinrich Heine University in Germany in early 2022 found a link between infection with the COVID-19 virus and an increased risk of diabetes. This study, which was conducted on 35,865 people, showed an increased risk of COVD-19 survivors developing diabetes by 28 percent compared to people who had other respiratory tract infections.
On the other hand, a study of 47,780 people in the UK noted that a 50 per cent more frequent diagnosis of new type 2 diabetes mellitus occurred in COVID-19 patients who had been hospitalized.
In fact, in a study conducted on 266,585 people in the United States, there was a fairly high increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in COVID-19 patients who had recovered within six months by 147 percent.
