Covid-19 infection in Indonesia exceeds 54,000 cases, what are the drugs? Page all

KOMPAS.com – The Covid-19 pandemic is a reality that we face today. The fact is that until yesterday afternoon, corona infection in Indonesia has exceeded 54,000 cases.

Lung specialist doctor from the Infection Division of the Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) Dr. Erlina Burhan, M.Sc, Sp.P, also said that Covid-19 is a dangerous disease. There are 2,754 Indonesians who died because of it.

Covid-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 corona virus infection is not an ordinary respiratory virus.

Erlina said that this disease also attacks important organs in the body. Starting from the brain, eyes, nose, cardiovascular, liver, intestinal, kidney, to neurological.

Erlina said, until now there has been no specific therapy and treatment for Covid-19. So, what drugs are given for patients?

“Because there is no specific drug, the medicine is given empirically, experience from other countries and experts,” he said.

During this emergency, there are several options for Covid-19 therapy used in Indonesia. Among these are azithromycin and chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine.

Reported SehatQazithromycin is useful for treating various kinds of bacterial infections in different parts of the body.

Azithromycin is a type of macrolide type antibiotic. This drug works by killing bacteria or preventing its growth. But for colds and colds, these drugs will not work.

While chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine is a drug that has long been used to treat and prevent malaria.

Chloroquine is believed to inhibit the growth of the virus after observing it can affect the process of endocytosis, which in this context means blocking the entry of the virus into the body.

This drug also interacts with receptors called cellular angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) which can prevent the virus from binding to the body’s receptors.

In a conference report held on February 15, 2020, the Chinese government together with researchers announced that it had tested chloroquine phosphate on 100 patients in 10 hospitals in Wuhan, China.

The results showed that chloroquine phosphate was effective in inhibiting complications of pneumonia in Covid-19 patients. In addition, the patient’s lung x-ray results improve for the better, inhibit the spread of the virus and restore the patient faster.

Although chloroquine has been used in the treatment of Covid-19, chloroquine was announced as a second-line treatment and not the main treatment, because in fact the drug Covid-19 has not been found.

Antivirus and other therapies

“And there are several antivirus offered, depending on availability,” he added.

Antivirals prescribed in the treatment of Covid-19 patients include Oseltamivir, Favipiravir, a combination of Lopinavir and Ritonavir, and Remdesivir.

Erlina said, Indonesia used oseltamivir as an antiviral because this drug was used in Singapore and China and gave good results.

In addition, this drug is also available in quite a lot in the national, some with aviation and remdesivir which is limited.

“But if the patient does not respond to these drugs, there are currently several other therapeutic options. Such as stem cell therapy, plasma convalescent therapy, IL-6 inhibitors (Tocilizumab, Sarilumab, Siltuximab), IL-2 inhibitors (Anakinra), interferon , human immunoglobulin, imonomodulator and steroids, “Erlina said.

“Especially for immunomodulators, there are a lot of drugs offered. If in the hospital, we still use vitamin C alone or multivitamins. Out there are many herbs or herbs, and I think (it) still needs clinical trials,” he explained.
