Scientists examined the medical histories of more than 354,000 South Koreans who had COVID-19 from October 2020 to December 2021 and compared them with data from 6.1 million Koreans who had never been infected with the virus.
As a result of research published in the journal Jama Network Open (18+), it turned out that infection with coronavirus significantly increases the risk of developing autoimmune diseases, from baldness to dangerous Wegener’s granulomatosis.
Those who had COVID-19 were more likely than those who were not sick to develop Crohn’s disease (by 59%) and sarcoidosis (by 68%). The risk of autoimmune focal and complete baldness increased by 12% and 74%, and Wegener’s granulomatosis increased by 2.76 times.
Autoimmune diseases were also more likely to develop in those who had severe forms of COVID-19 than in those with less severe symptoms.
Coronavirus infection can cause serious disruptions in the functioning of various organs, and also increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
