COVID-19 Increase in scams for taxpayers

During disasters and national emergencies, there is always an increase in the number of scam calls and emails from individuals looking to use the crisis for personal gain.

There are important things to remember when working with the Department of Revenue (DOR):

  1. DOR does not charge businesses to access assistance options.

  2. DOR will NOT call you asking for your social security number, your bank account number, or your credit card number.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be a DOR representative asking for your social security number, bank account number, or credit card number, hang up and call us at 360-705-6705. You can also report suspicious calls to the State Attorney General and the FTC Federal Trade Commission Fraud Hotline. Note that DOR agents may call taxpayers by phone to review accounts in arrears and they will leave a message asking the taxpayer to call them at 360-705-6705. If you’re not sure if a call or message is legitimate, call 360-705-6705.

  1. Beware of taxpayers applying and charging for services during this state of emergency.

Taxes can be complicated, but getting assistance is not.
