Covid-19 in the North: new suspected cases fall below the 1,000 threshold

SEOUL, July 12 — Additional suspected cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in North Korea have fallen below 1,000, the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday.

More than 900 people showed symptoms of fever in the 24-hour period up to 6 p.m. yesterday, the KCNA said, citing data from the State Headquarters for Emergency Epidemic Prevention. No information on the number of additional deaths has been provided.

The total number of fever cases since late April stood at more than 4.76 million as of 6 p.m. Monday, with 99.96 percent having recovered and at least 1,850 currently receiving treatment, the agency added. The daily number of fever cases in the country is currently falling after peaking at 392,920 cases on May 15.

The North Korean authorities have recently readjusted the intensity of anti-virus measures according to the epidemic situation in each region, while tightening restrictions in border areas. On July 1, the hermit country claimed its first cases of Covid-19 appeared in an area near the inter-Korean border after a soldier and a child came into contact with “strange things” in the area.

“The atmosphere of mutual help and control is being strengthened day by day to prevent any contact with unusual objects or wild animals,” the KCNA said. The “unusual items” here seem to refer to anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent by a group of North Korean defectors to the South.

“The extermination of pest animals considered dangerous factors and voids in the epidemic prevention operation has been implemented on a large scale, and the work to clear up streets, residential areas and workplaces is being carried out carefully,” she added.
