The case was disclosed by another member of this family group, who desperately requested help for medications, because other relatives were ill and also required psychiatric care to be able to face this moment of pain.

Despite the fact that in the first instance the testimony of the people was strange for the health authorities, the District Health Secretariat found that the fact was real. He added that not only the five people died of covid-19, but also that three other members of the family were infected.

The head of this portfolio, Henrique Toscano, said that to date this family had not requested the assistance of the District’s health authorities and that they even went to be treated in clinics when they were already in an advanced stage of the disease.

“The way in which they proceeded when presenting symptoms, prevented us from identifying the degree of affectation among the family and assisting them promptly in what they needed”said the official.

They got infected on a birthday

The investigation and monitoring carried out by the Ministry of Health allowed to establish that the massive contagion was generated during a celebration meeting of a woman’s 100th birthday.

“One of the lady’s children already had the virus and, without knowing it, infected the other attendees, who in the following days began to suffer from the symptoms and due to their advanced age they could not bear the disease and died one by one” Toscano noted.

The first to die was the old woman who just reached her 100 years of life, then four of her children who were over 60 also had the same fatal outcome.

“The four people who lived in the residence where the meeting was held, including the older adult, came for care in their respective EPS individually, which made it difficult to relate them as members of a family conglomerate,” explained the official.

The other deceased person resided in another nucleus and despite having a blood connection, it was unknown that he was part of that family.

The Secretary of Health on the other three infected relatives, said that two are asymptomatic and one has moderate symptoms. “We began to monitor the three of them and they are already isolated,” he said.

The health entity practiced the epidemiological fence among the infected, to prevent the virus from continuing to spread. Likewise, it began the respective psychological accompaniment between the relatives, mainly between a son of the old woman who is in special conditions and who was still unaware of the tragedy that the coronavirus caused among this Samarian family.
