Infectious disease doctor and coordinator in Colombia of covid-19 studies for the World Health Organization (WHO), Carlos Álvarez, said several investigations are underway in the country into new treatments that could be used to this disease.
The expert pointed out that the analyzes are focused on the drugs, whether oral or vaccine, that would be present testing process in several hospital institutions nationwide.
“One of the important points we need information about covid-19 is that of new drugs for patients who are hospitalized for the disease, because there are currently no effective targeted treatments against the virus and the World Health Organization has been working on research protocols in several hospitals in Colombia and around the world, ”he indicated.

He added that this process aims to find that some of these treatments have important utility in patients admitted to hospital for covid-19.
“At the same time, work is being done in Colombia and around the world on the study of vaccines called ‘Solidarity’ where work is underway to evaluate new vaccines that may be useful for the covid-19 outbreak, because we still don’t know when to get vaccinated and we don’t know how effective vaccines are in the long term, so we need new vaccines available to the world population“, he indicated.
He said that, as part of this ongoing research in Colombia, there will be the novelty of a nasal vaccine that it can be of great interest to the Colombian population.
“We have already started clinical trials with a vaccine that the results are being evaluated at this time, but we are waiting to start with a second vaccine, in several municipalities of the country and it is a nasal vaccine, because we believe that this dose could be more useful to reduce reinfections ” , He explained.
