The number of COVID-19 cases continued to decline almost across Canada on Wednesday. The trend is mainly observable in Quebec and Ontario, where the number of daily infections continues to decline.

Thus, barely 308 cases were added to Quebec’s toll, in addition to four deaths, during the last day, despite a slight resumption of screening which had reached very low levels during the long weekend. This is the fifth straight decrease in the number of new cases east of the Ottawa River.

As a bonus, the number of hospitalized patients with the virus dropped back below 400 bedridden patients (399), while 101 patients remained in intensive care.

Ontario can also rejoice with the addition of 1,095 cases to its balance sheet, a number up slightly, but which remains uncommon compared to the worst moments of the third wave.

On the other hand, 23 deaths were also added in the most populous province of Canada, where the number of hospitalizations (1073, +48) remains very high, particularly taking into account the fact that 672 patients are still in intensive care due to virus.

Rapid deconfinement

The improvement is also notable in the West, especially in Alberta (390 cases, 6 dead) where Prime Minister Jason Kenney presented a roadmap for rapid deconfinement.

According to this plan, the terraces will be able to reopen as of next Monday in the province, while gatherings outside can bring together up to 10 people. Personal care businesses may also reopen.

Health measures will then be gradually lifted, while the government plans to achieve complete deconfinement by the end of June, two weeks after reaching a vaccination rate of 70% of the population.

“The good news is that with the indicators on the decline and the vaccination on the rise and with the arrival of summer temperatures, we expect to see the pressure on our hospitals continue to decrease”, he said. delighted Jason Kenney as his province, badly battered by the third wave, has more hospitalized patients (548) with the virus than Quebec, including in intensive care (157).
